Precautions For Plastic Design Of Pin Header

Pin header connector is composed of two parts: contacts and plastic/insulation. According to the spacing of contacts, it can be divided into 0.8mm, 1.0mm, 1.27mm, 2.0mm, 2.54mm, 3.96mm and 5.08mm pin header plug connector.

The number of pin rows of pin header connector can be divided into: single row, double row, three rows, and four rows, so some important things are needed when designing insulation of the pin header connector.

 

The role of plastic in pin header is to fix the contacts and keep the pins insulated. Due to the limitation of filling performance of some plastic raw materials, if the thickness of plastic wall is less than 0.2mm, it will be very difficult to fill. If the area of the production thickness is larger, the phenomenon of insufficient mold is more likely to occur.

 

The thickness of plastic material between the contacts of pin header determine the insulation resistance and electrical resistance of the connector. If there is no full mold between the contacts, the contacts are likely to be disconnected. It is a serious quality problem of product. Therefore, the thickness of the plastic wall between the contacts of pin header connector should be designed to be more than 0.25 mm, and the length of thin-walled section should be minimized.

 

For the thin-walled (less than 0.3mm) phenomenon that often occurs on both sides of plastic parts due to size restrictions, find ways to thicken them, otherwise it is easy to appear insufficient. The mold or strength is too low to be damaged during injection molding, packaging and transit.

There is also a point about the plastic size of the pin header connector. How to mark the plastic size and how much the tolerance value is suitable is not confirmed by the designer or the person who marked the size, it’s decided by what are the requirements for the product requirements(function, production process, process capabilities). At the same time, factors such as assembly, electroplating, and automatic machine production must also be considered during design, so as to ensure that the produced pin header products can be correctly connected to the circuit board of the customer's product in customers’ hands.
