Plastic materials are often used in the production of female connectors. Commonly used plastic materials are PBT, PA6T, PA9T, and LCP. Do you know the difference between these four plastics? The following will analyze and explain the quality and temperature resistance of PBT, 6T, 9T and LCP.
1. PBT plastic material
It is generally used to make 180°/90° female headers with a spacing of 2.54mm, and the welding resistance temperature is only about 230 degrees. This material is still chosen by many customers due to its low cost, high strength and friction resistance compared to other materials. However, this material has poor formability, severe shrinkage, and low melting temperature, and plastic melting will occur during wave soldering. Especially nowadays, lead-free production is becoming more and more popular. Lead-free production process adopts higher temperature, under this condition, PBT couldn’t be used or the insulation will melt after soldering.
2. PA6T/Nylon 6T insulation material
This type of material is generally used on PH2.54mm SMT and PH1.27mm/PH2mm series female headers. Since the soldering resistance temperature is 260℃. The cost of female connectors produced with this material is slightly higher,but its performance after soldering is more stable, and price of PA6T is cheaper than LCP, now PA6T is most widely used in the market.
In CNT, except several kinds of straight PH2.54mm female socket header connector have option of PBT, all the other female headers default to PA6T plastic material.
3. PA9T/Nylon 9T plastic material
This material is similar to PA6T, and is generally used for PH2.54mm SMT and PH1.27mm/PH2mm series female headers. The soldering resistance temperature is 260℃, and the instantaneous temperature can reach 300℃. Due to the high price of this material,not many customers will use 9T plastic materials to produce connector products.
4. LCP plastic material
This material can be used to produce various spacing series of female header, and its soldering resistance temperature is 260℃, and the instantaneous temperature can reach up to 320℃. Because the linear expansion coefficient of this material is very small, the molding shrinkage rate of injection molding is low, the strength and elastic modulus are outstanding, the heat resistance is good, and the load deformation temperature is high, so some of them even can reach more than 340℃.But relatively, the price of this material is also the most expensive than above three kinds.
